Detection and Use of Spiritual Gifts in the Life of the Church

Spiritual gifts are an integral part of the life of any church. They have become a gift from the Holy Spirit to each of us, so that we may serve one another and spread God's love on earth. Today we will explore how to discover and use these gifts for the building up of the church.

What Are Spiritual Gifts?

Spiritual gifts are special abilities that God bestows upon believers to fulfill His will.

Romans 12:6-8

“Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.”

These verses indicate that the gifts are diverse, yet we are all called to use them for the growth of the church and community.

How to Discover Your Spiritual Gifts?

Discovering spiritual gifts is a journey towards a deeper understanding of your faith and personal calling. Here are a few steps that can assist in this process:

  1. Prayer. First and foremost, turn to God in prayer. Ask Him to reveal your gifts and how to use them.
  2. Service. Serve in various areas of the church. This could be assisting in children's ministry, worship, or organizing events. As you engage in service, you may discover which gifts you possess.
  3. Advice. Request feedback from older brothers and sisters in faith regarding your gifts. They may notice things you are not aware of.

How to Use Spiritual Gifts?

Once you have identified your gifts, it is time to take action. Proper use of gifts leads to the growth of the church and strengthens faith in the community. Here are some recommendations:

  • Unity. All gifts should work together. Remember that your service complements that of others. Join a ministry group to exchange ideas and support one another.
  • Education. Develop your gifts through learning. Participation in seminars, conferences, or courses will help you grow in your calling.
  • Enthusiasm. Do not lose your zeal. Your passion for service can inspire others to new endeavors and achievements.

Do not forget that we are not alone. Scripture points us to the importance of unity in service:

1 Corinthians 12:12-14

“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.”

Let us pray for one another and maintain sincerity in our service. May our spiritual gifts flourish for the glory of God!
