Service is one of the foundational aspects of every Christian's life. It is not just an obligation but a privilege to be able to partake in God's work. We, as believers, are called to be witnesses of Christ in the world. 1 Peter 4:10
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
The Church is not just a building or a community, but a living organism, in which each member has its place and purpose. When we serve, we fulfill not only our personal callings but also serve the Church as a whole. Each of us can become a hand that brings hope to those who need it.
Service is diverse: helping the poor, supporting one another, teaching, preaching the Word of God, praying for others. All of these are elements of how we can respond to God’s call in our lives. Thus, each of us can become a servant, regardless of the circumstances we find ourselves in.
The Bible speaks about the various gifts we have been given, and it is important to realize this. When we understand our strengths, we can serve better not only the church community but also the people around us. Romans 12:6-8
“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”
Why is all this necessary? Why is service important? First of all, service is a way to express God’s love to people. When we help others, when we pray for them, or simply support them, we show that we are Christ’s disciples. John 13:34-35
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.”
Service also strengthens faith. When we share our time and resources, we see how God works in our lives and in the lives of those around us. This brings us satisfaction, joy, and a sense of duty fulfilled.
Take the first step—find opportunities to serve. This could be participating in charity events, helping in Sunday school, or just being part of a prayer service. Every response to the call to serve is important. Do not be afraid, for you have the potential to be the hands of God in this world. Ephesians 2:10
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Let us be ready to play our role in serving, so that we can grow together in grace and God’s mission. May your heart be open to service—and you will see how God uses you in a special way to bring love and light into the darkness of this world.
