The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, and His action is an unchanging part of our spiritual life. God's plan stipulates that we, as believers, should feel His presence and guidance in our lives. Sometimes we may wonder: how can we recognize the action of the Holy Spirit? - especially when we contemplate our ministry and purpose on this earth.
Let’s recall the event from Acts 2:1-4 on Pentecost, when the disciples received the divine gift of the Holy Spirit:
Acts 2:1-4"When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."
This event became symbolic for all of Christianity. It attests to how the Holy Spirit can change our lives and give them new meaning. So, how can we recognize His action in our lives? Let’s explore a few key points.
When the Holy Spirit is active within us, we begin to feel an internal witness. This feeling may come in the form of peace, or conversely, unrest if we are on the wrong path. Often, this action can be felt during prayer or meditation on God's word. You might ask yourself: "Do I feel His presence nearby?" This can be your sign.
The action of the Holy Spirit in our lives can also manifest as an increasing desire to serve others. When you feel that a burden to help others or to serve in the church is laid upon your heart, this is one of the manifestations of the Holy Spirit. Remember the words from Isaiah 61:1:
Isaiah 61:1This is visible evidence that the Spirit of God is leading us to action."The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives..."
Through the Holy Spirit, things become possible that we could not achieve on our own. Philippians 4:13 reminds us:
Philippians 4:13The Spirit can give you strength to overcome challenges or fulfill the mission He has placed on your heart."I can do all this through him who gives me strength."
Remember that we are called to follow the Holy Spirit. As stated in Galatians 5:25:
Galatians 5:25This means that we need to listen to His guidance, responding to His actions."Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit."
The ministry of the Holy Spirit is not just something that happens in church or at specific moments. It is a continual process in our lives; it is a relationship with God that enriches us and leads to change. Therefore, open your heart to the action of the Holy Spirit, trust Him, and follow Him. Amen.
